PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances)

PFAS are a massive group of human-made “forever chemicals” cooked up since the 1940s. Their super-strong carbon-fluorine bonds make them resist heat, water, and oil—and they don’t break down easily, sticking around in our environment and bodies for years.

Where They’re Found: These sneaky toxins pop up in tons of everyday stuff:

  • Soaps and Detergents: Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) cousins and foaming agents.
  • Candles and Fragrances: Scented candles and air fresheners with phthalates or synthetic fragrances.
  • Non-Stick Cookware: Think Teflon pans (PFOA was a biggie ‘til it got phased out).
  • Food Packaging: Grease-proof wrappers, microwave popcorn bags, pizza boxes.
  • Clothing and Fabrics: Water-repellent jackets, stain-resistant carpets.
  • Cosmetics: Shampoos, nail polish, dental floss with fluoride ingredients.
  • Water and Soil: Can contaminate tap water or soil in polluted areas

Damage they Cause: PFAS are no joke—studies link them to

Hormone Disruption: Messes with estrogen and thyroid function—think fatigue, weight shifts, or fertility hiccups.
Cancer: Kidney and testicular cancers tied to high exposure (PFOA and PFOS especially).
Immune Issues: Weakens vaccine response and overall immunity.
Liver Damage: Spikes in enzymes, hinting at long-term stress.
Pregnancy Risks: High blood pressure or low birth weights.
Cholesterol: Bumps up levels—heart health alert!

It can feel overwhelming with the multitude of products that may cause harm. That’s why raising awareness about what we buy and consume is so important—to help us make informed choices. Starting with simple swaps: eliminate the most obvious toxins and replace them with gentler, non-toxic alternatives on your next purchase. Every small step will make a difference.
